Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana was an American artist, set designer and costume designer, associated with the Pop Art movement. He was born in New Castle on September 13, 1928 and in 1954 he moved to New York, where he joined the Pop Art movement. Indiana lived as a resident of the island town of Vinalhaven, Maine, since 1978, where he died, in 2018. Indiana's work often consists of bold, simple, iconic images, especially numbers and short words such as "EAT", "HUG" and "LOVE". During his career he has reconfigured the aesthetics of US slogans, advertising and commercial logos into luminous and essentialist works, which make us reflect on the theme of national identity and the power of language. The best known image among those made by Indiana is undoubtedly the word LOVE in capital letters, arranged in a square with the letter O inclined.
