Pino Pinelli

Pino Pinelli was born in Catania in 1938, where he completed his artistic studies. In 1963 he moved to Milan, where he still lives and works, fascinated and attracted by the artistic debate of those years, animated by figures such as Lucio Fontana, Piero Manzoni, Enrico Castellani. He participated in the San Fedele awards and in 1968 held his first solo exhibition at the Galleria Bergamini. In the early '70s Pinelli began a phase of reflection and research, in which he tried to focus on the essential link between tradition and innovation, with particular attention to the pictorial surface, to the vibrations of painting. Thus were born the cycles of the "Topologie" and those of the "Monochromes", whose surface begins to be moved by subtle restlessness, as if the artist wanted to give us back the breath of painting itself. These experiences make him place in the trend that Filiberto Menna called "analytical painting", even if since 1976 Pinelli drastically reduces the size of his works, which are being placed in space, juxtaposed with each other, as if an explosion had hit his large canvases and had generated a dissemination of their fragments in space: the artist abandons canvas and frame, attracted by the very concept of painting. Giovanni Maria Accade writes in the monograph Pino Pinelli, continuity and dissemination (Lubrina, Bergamo 1991): "On these deer skins shipwrecks, for Pinelli, the conception of a painting that recognizes as its seat the delimited area of the painting. On the contrary, the perspective of a painting in perpetual migration, in the intermediable phenomenal spatiality, opens. An exit from the painting that is not a negation of painting, but a different conception of it. Differently pursued and itself a pursuer of a space that is always absorbent and never completed, painting contracts to expand, it seems to deny itself but to be able to assert itself even more". Beyond the labels of "analytical painting", Pinelli's works fascinate: restless bodies of painting walking in space, floating and migrating in small or large formations, made of materials that bear the signs of an anxious ductility, and that enhance the tactile physicality and visual happiness of a pulsating color of luminous vibrations.
