Yayoi Kusama is a Japanese artist born in 1929 in Matsumoto. She begins to draw from an early age, but her family, however, does not accept her passion, so much so that her mother destroys her drawings before she manages to finish them. It is precisely for this reason that one of yayoi Kusama's first art forms are polka dots, elements that are quick to draw. In his canvases you can perceive a sense of perdition within a space that moves at an incredible speed. Despite the contrary opinion of the family, Kusama continues to devote himself to art and to study painting, until in the bookstore he finds a book with the paintings of the artist Georgia O'Keeffe. The artist becomes her source of inspiration and impresses her so much that Kusama writes her a letter. To O'Keefe's response and enticed by the idea of being in a new cultural context, in 1958 Kusama moved to the United States. His works are based on conceptual art, pop art and surrealism and are all united by the technique of polka dots. In 1969 the artist also founded Kusama Enterprises, a store selling clothing, bags and cars that reflect kusama's themes and aesthetics, in particular the use of polka dots and repetitive patterns. The works you find on our site are copies of the author.
